EARLY DISMISSAL DAY

Friday, October 19th is a scheduled early dismissal day. As per Article 36.01 of the Collective Agreement this constitutes part of preparation and planning time for elementary teachers. Early dismissal days are teacher-directed. Teachers should not be asked to attend in-services or staff meetings during this time.

MEDIA LITERACY SYMPOSIUM

OECTA is holding a media literacy symposium on November 23 and 24 in Toronto at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel. The symposium is designed to assist teachers in addressing the challenges and opportunities that media provide, particularly as they pertain to Catholic education. Media is a powerful cultural force that has a profound influence on the worldview that students adopt. It can inform and illuminate, but it can also mislead and manipulate.

If you are interested in attending the Symposium, you can register online at www.oecta.on.ca up until November 2, 2007. (The hotel registration deadline is October 23, 2007.) The Eastern Unit has been allocated 10 elementary and 6 secondary spaces for teachers to attend. Release time will be reimbursed by provincial OECTA, as will travel and accommodation costs.
