Merger Permanent and Occasional Teacher OECTA Locals
Both the permanent and occasional teacher locals have approved the merger of the two local bargaining units. As outlined in past Eastern Updates, occasional teachers with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario have been full members of OECTA and Eastern Unit except for bargaining. The motion approved by occasional teachers (98%) was to approve the request for the Eastern Ontario Unit to negotiate on its behalf, the renewal of the 2004-08 collective agreement. The motion approved by permanent teacher members (82%) was to accept the bargaining representation duties of the occasional teacher local for the renewal of the 2004-08 collective agreement. Discussion on the merger and negotiations for the next collective agreement will now take place with the Board.
As with any round of negotiations, prior to the next set of negotiations, much research will be done to put together a proposal which deals with issues that impact our members – i.e. rights, salary, benefits, workload, etc. – keeping in mind the common good of all members of Eastern Ontario OECTA and provincial initiatives which relate to the common good of Catholic teachers across the province.
